Sobradillo Astronomical Observatory

Facilities

The Sobradillo Astronomical Observatory boasts modern facilities with advanced technology for observing the night sky. The observatory is topped by a 5.15-meter-diameter hemispherical dome, constructed from sheet metal and featuring an exclusive design that optimizes protection and telescope access.

At the heart of the observation area is the main telescope, a 20-inch (50.8 cm) Newtonian with a focal ratio of 4.5. This telescope features high-precision optics designed at the observatory and manufactured in Texas, along with a semi-open structure that maximizes image quality and adapts to the local climate.

The observatory’s custom-designed equatorial mount, both mechanically and electronically, integrates cutting-edge technology, providing exceptional stability and precision for tracking celestial objects. Fully robotic and network-connected, this mount allows for efficient and flexible remote control.

To capture detailed images, the observatory is equipped with two cameras: one CMOS and one CCD, both designed for various astronomical applications. Telescope control is managed from a modern control center, located below the observation room, enabling visitors to enjoy a high-quality viewing experience in a comfortable and secure environment.
